A review will be made of both large and small civil and mining projects to examine the technical and management issues that affected their success and or failure. The projects will include, The Hugh Keenleyside Dam on the Columbia River, partially built underwater on deep alluvial deposits, dikes along the Thompson River, BC, historical failures of mine waste disposal systems and their effect on current practices, work as an expert witness for geotechnical failures, the roles and responsibilities of team members on multidisciplined projects.

Mr. John Gadsby is a civil/geotechnical engineer. He received a Diploma in civil engineering from the London Technical University in 1955 and M.S. from the University of Illinois (U.S.) in 1961. He first worked in the U.K. with engineering consultants and contractors. He moved to Canada in 1962.
In the last 40 years he has been the project director for environmental/engineering studies for the mining industry. He was the Project Director for the environmental/engineering studies in Zambia (Africa) for the re-structuring of the Zambian national copper mining company (ZCCM -1993 to 1997), and the project director for the design of the Antamina tailings disposal system (1999 – 2001). In 1992, at the request of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers and Catolica University, he presented a series of 10 lectures on modern methods of mine waste disposal. In 1993 he assisted the Peruvian Ministry of Mines on the master plan for the Environmental Management (EMTAL World Bank) and in 1997 on the preliminary strategic plan for environmental improvements on mining projects.
John is the pioneer for the concept of “Designing and operating for mine closure” which is considered as the best practice for mining projects worldwide.
