At CGS-SOS, we were very saddened to hear the passing of Dr. Paulo Branco. Paulo was a dear friend to us and touched our lives with his overwhelming kindness. He was a respected and well reputed professional engineer, practitioner and mentor. With over 35 years of professional practice, Paulo was very well known for his expertise in tunneling and soft ground engineering. He was one of the pioneers in the application of risk management concepts in tunneling and underground earthworks in Southern Ontario and contributed in numerous high profile transportation and infrastructure projects in Southern Ontario and across Canada.
Paulo was a valuable and highly respected member of CGS-SOS community. He graciously volunteered his time at different capacities, and served our community by volunteering at the executive committee, chairing the CGS-SOS executive committee and acting as the CGS-SOS regional director. Also, he volunteered at the Tunneling Association of Canada (TAC) as chairman and Associate editor of TAC journal. He was an active member of the foundations Committee of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC). In appreciation of his contributions to our geotechnical society, he was presented with the prestigious CGS-SOS award in 2014-2015. This award is sponsored by the CGS-SOS and recognizes the recipient’s contributions to the geotechnical community in Southern Ontario through service to the advancement of research, improvement of design, development of construction, and/or participation at CGS-SOS. Dr. Branco left a legacy of passion, professionalism and expertise.
